Notice code CP24
You got a CP24. Your estimated payments did not match.
The IRS changed your refund to match the estimated payments it has on record.
The IRS says the corrected refund arrives in 4 to 6 weeks unless you owe other taxes or debts.
Start by checking each payment listed on the notice against your own bank records.
Briefing for CP24
IRS pageThe IRS corrected your return because your estimated payments did not match its records.
If you disagree, call the IRS number on the notice by the date printed in its top right corner.
- Agree and wait for the corrected refund.
- Disagree and call the number on the notice with payment proof.
Which numbers matter?
4 to 6 weeks
The refund is still coming, at the corrected amount, and the IRS says it arrives in 4 to 6 weeks if you owe no other taxes or debts.
Count 6 weeks from the notice date: a notice dated October 6, 2026 means November 17, 2026. If nothing has arrived by then, call 800-829-1040 with the notice in hand.
What changed recently?
Since September 30, 2025, the IRS has stopped issuing paper refund checks to most individuals, so a corrected refund normally comes by direct deposit.

What is the IRS saying?
The notice shows each payment the IRS has on record and the corrected refund or credit. CP24E, CP24G and CP24U are versions of the same notice.
Why did you get it?
The most common cause is a wrong number on the estimated tax line, or a payment that went to the wrong year. Take Priya. She typed her 2025 estimated payments as $4,000 when the IRS had $3,000, so her refund dropped by $1,000. Her bank records showed only three $1,000 payments, so she accepted the new amount.
Is it real?
A real CP24 never asks for a fee, a gift card or a bank login. To confirm it was sent, look for it in your IRS online account, or call 800-829-1040.
Still unsure? Search the code on the IRS notice search, or use the real or fake checklist.
When is your deadline?
If you disagree, call the IRS number on the notice by the date printed in its top right corner.
What if you agree?
Nothing to do except wait for the refund and fix your records for next year.
What if you don't agree?
Gather proof of each payment, such as bank statements or EFTPS confirmations, and call the number on the notice by the date shown.
What happens if you ignore it?
If you ignore it, the IRS pays the corrected refund shown on the notice. If a payment listed is missing, call the IRS number on the notice by its printed date with your payment proof.

When will I get my refund after a CP24?
The IRS says within 4 to 6 weeks, as long as you owe no other taxes or debts it must collect.
Why did I get a CP24 if I do not pay estimated tax?
A number was typed on the estimated tax line by mistake, or someone else's payment was applied to you. Call the number on the notice.
What if a payment on the CP24 is not mine?

Do I need to send anything back?
If you agree, no. If you disagree, call the number on the notice by its printed date and have your payment proof ready.
