A real IRS letter shows a CP or LTR number here, so a missing number is a warning sign.

LTR 4883C

This is what a real letter number looks like, so search yours before you pay or reply.

Form 2439

The 2026 Dirty Dozen list added abusive capital gains claims on this form, so do not file one on a promoter's word.

Send us your letter details

By sending this, you agree that a licensed tax professional may call or text you at the number you entered about your notice, including with automated dialing. Consent is not a condition of any purchase.

What does a real notice have?

  • A notice or letter number, such as LTR 4883C, printed in the top right corner.
  • Your tax year and the exact amount or item the IRS is asking about.
  • Payment steps that point to irs.gov or to "United States Treasury", never a gift card or a person's name.

The IRS usually reaches you first by U.S. mail. It emails or texts only if you opted in, and a social media message is never from the IRS, per its contact rules.

Find your code in all notice codes, or upload a photo to read my letter.

Which IRS scam letters are going around now?

These fake mailings are being reported right now:

  • Letters about "digital asset compliance" that send you by QR code to a fake site copying irs.gov.
  • Mail about an unclaimed refund that asks you to send photos or bank details.
  • Envelopes that come from an unusual delivery service rather than the Postal Service.

The IRS 2026 Dirty Dozen list also added item #6. It covers abusive long-term capital gains claims on Form 2439 and replaces the fuel tax credit item.

A letter with a QR code, a "portal" deadline, and no notice number in the corner should not be scanned.

Can I check it in my IRS account?

Sign in to your IRS online account. Many real notices show up there, along with your true balance. If the letter says you owe and your account shows nothing, treat the letter as suspect.

With no account, search the letter number on the IRS notice page. If it is not listed or looks odd, call us. Do not act on anything the letter you doubt tells you to do.

How do I report a fake?

  • Fake email or text: do not click any link, and keep the message for the report.
  • Fake call or letter: keep the letter and write down what the caller asked for.
  • Any fake: do not pay, scan a code, or send photos of your ID.

Call us, and a licensed tax pro goes through the steps on the IRS reporting page with you. Our tax pro also checks whether a real IRS issue sits behind the fake.
