  • Call the number on the notice if the amount looks wrong.

Which numbers matter?

21 calendar days

Your due date falls 21 calendar days after the IRS sent the notice, or 10 business days for large bills.

Find the payment date printed on your notice and mark it today.

$50,000

If you owe $50,000 or less and your returns are filed, a Simple Payment Plan is open to you.

Check your total balance against $50,000 before you choose how to pay.

10 years

Most people on a Simple Payment Plan get up to 10 years to pay.

Pick a monthly amount you can keep paying every month.

Check your CP14 before CP501 arrives

Your CP14 is due on the date printed on it, set 21 calendar days or 10 business days after mailing.

Unpaid, it leads to CP501, CP503 and CP504, but a licensed tax professional can check the balance and plan payments.

What happens when you call

  1. You call during business hours and say you have a CP14.
  2. A licensed tax professional asks for the date, the amount and the tax years on the letter.
  3. You hear your options for this notice and decide what to do. Nothing is filed without your yes.

A licensed tax professional answers, not the IRS. The call costs nothing, and you give up nothing by calling. IRS Code Lookup is a private tax help service.

Would you rather send your CP14 details?

Your CP14 shows the balance, the penalties, the interest and the due date in one place.

Sending those details lets a licensed tax professional check the amount and match you with a payment plan that fits.

One licensed tax professional gets these details and contacts you about this notice. Nobody else gets them.

What changed recently?

Since 2026, the IRS offers Simple Payment Plans to individuals who owe $50,000 or less and are current on filing. Most taxpayers get up to 10 years, and more than 90% of individual taxpayers qualify.

What is the IRS saying?

This is a bill. It shows the tax you owe, the penalties and interest added so far, and the date to pay by.

If you live in a federally declared disaster area, you should get a CP14C instead, which gives you extra time.

Why did you get it?

A balance was left after your return was processed. Maybe you filed without paying, or paid less than the return showed.

Take June. She filed her 2025 return on time but could only send half of what she owed. The CP14 is the IRS billing her for the rest.

Is it real?

A real CP14 has the code in the top right, your tax year, and a payment slip. You can see the same balance by signing in to your IRS online account.

Still unsure? Search the code on the IRS notice search, or use the real or fake checklist.

When is your deadline?

Pay by the date on the notice. The IRS says interest is added to anything unpaid after that date, and a late payment penalty applies.

What if you agree?

Pay online, or apply for a payment plan if you cannot pay it all. The IRS also mentions an offer in compromise for people who cannot pay.

What if you don't agree?

Call the number on the notice before the due date. Have your return and proof of payments ready.

What happens if you ignore it?

More notices follow: CP501, then CP503, then CP504, the intent to levy. Interest and penalties keep growing the whole time.
